THE BIG LINK-UP!!!!

After nearly 40 years of talking about it and 3 years of building, the BIG LINK-UP is actually going to go ahead. Season 2009/10 marks the join up of Kanin, Slovenias highest ski resort and Sella Nevea in Italy . While Kanin has always been a fun place to ski with amazing views and plenty of character, it could never be labeled as 'big' resort. Now skiers will be able to ski over the border and down into Italy. This long awaited advancement will triple the size of the ski area and should secure Kanins position as an internationally recognized ski area.

The link-up will increase the resorts potential for greater off-piste skiing and freeride boarding as well as providing a range of on piste skiing for all abilities.

While skiing in Slovenia may seem a novel idea to some, the benefits of skiing in this unique country are endless. From excellent snow conditions, quieter pistes, longer seasons to the ‘three course meal for under 8Euros’ served in Kanins restaurant there are many reasons to to at least give it a go, and this season be the best time to do so!

Casa Rosa Veggies

The veg patch has been a real challenge for me. Constantly admiring other peoples neat rows and sqaures of perfect produce and wondering if I can ever aspire to that. The Casa Rosa patch has not been pretty to say the least but in amongst the relentless weeds. There has been some amount of success. Trillions of yellow courgettes, cucumbers and and lots of salad. Some misshapen carrots, a huge parsley bush, beans galore, and one or two butternut on their way. Not to mention the entire field of potatoes. So not to bad really, however my dream to provide veg boxes for guests may have been a bit ambitious and reality amounted to a couple of courgettes or some salad.

The plums were made into delicious Plum and ginger jam and a diet of courgette soup and cucumber salad has been adopted. Well my taste of the good life is not over yet as the Casa Rosa Vine is dripping with grapes which are to be harvested next week and made into wine, a very exciting task.

Not to forget the pots outside the house, containing Chillies, strawberries and cherry tomatoes.

'The appartment was amazing and so are the surroundings!!! Slovenia and the Soca are beautiful. First time here but definately NOT the last. Future guests must try out some of the activities on the Soca. We used Soca rafting and went kayaking and hydro-speeding-both were good fun especially as we got our own guide between the two of us.
Lake Bled is also worth a day trip-we took the car train there and back (18 Euros) which gave us plenty of time to look around the castle and the lake.'

Flying High above the Soca Valley

Having spent two days watching a plane take-off, full of people prepared to fling themselves out of the door and fall hurtling towards the ground before opening an umbrella, well parachute. I was just still not sure if I was up to the challenge or not. The fantastic instructor Jason Snailham was doing a great job at giving people the experience of a life-time, and after all he was here for just two days but it just seemed it wasn't for me, maybe next time. I did, however like the idea of the plane ride, through the Stunning Soca valley. So on enquiring about the possibility of this I was assured that sitting in the back of the plane (now void of jumpers) landing again with the door open would not be much fun for a passenger. Never mind, there are other tour planes in the valley. i would get another chance. I would have to make do with a picture from the ground....

Well just before the plane was due to fly onwards to Czech republic I was invited to be a passenger on the test flight which would determine the planes maneuverability within the valley. This in view of a return trip to the valley as a permanent feature and addition to the valleys already awesome selection of extreme sports. Well the flight was incredible and here is just some of what I saw....

The Boka waterfall.....

The Turquoise Soca River....

Gorenje Zaga, the setting for Casa Rosa....

Bovec and the Airfield.

The flight was sensational and with ever moment I was reminded of just how beautiful and unique place the Soca Valley is!

'Perfect weather skiid Kanin and Tarvisio. We could see the sea from the top of Kanin. The view from the top of Monte Lussaro in Tarvisio has to be seen to be believed. This is also the start of the downhill run which must be skiid.

Spring BBQ Fun

With awesome temperatures up to 26 degrees in April the inviting bank of the Soca river has already hosted some fine BBQ's. Easter Sunday; a few hours on Kanin enjoying the spring skiing, then to the river for a touch of sun-bathing followed by fresh trout cooked on the fire.
It feels like summer is already here and there is a fresh vibe around the valley. With river guides re-appearing from far flung corners of the world to take up there summer posts and the luxury of the ski and river combos available daily the valley seems more alive.

Besides this spring is giving the valley its trademark green forest coated mountains and family veg plots are sprouting all manner of exciting shoots. The Casa Rosa garden has been planted with Potatoes and other veg to be planted soon.

Ofcourse we plan to have many more BBQ's this summer and spend many more hours appreciating our stunning river Soca!! Watch this space.

A SPOT OF GARDENING!!!

Turn this into a vegetable patch....
It's officially spring. Suddenly the fields are alive with hard working people all preparing for the much anticipated vegetable gardens. And for some reason, I am not sure whether it is some attempt to match up or just stupidity, I have decided to give it a go. Already a few things have taken me by surprise, firstly the size of the garden...it is not a patch oh no, it is VAST, a considerable field!!! Secondly the size of the machinery. This is not a job for trowels and gloves, instead strange dangerous looking tractor like contraptions with teeth!!!
Well one day spent on the patch and it was finally resembling some of the other patches in the area. Now all we need is Veg (and vast quantities of dung!!)
well, veg we now have, it is small and seedling-like but none the less my gardening Guru informs they will one day blossom into Cucumbers, butternut squash, beans and even peppers!!!
I hope to be able to be successful in my venture, and even consider supplying veg boxes for guests. Watch this space.
